Osteopathic Treatment

Pregnancy-Related Pain

Pregnancy places significant demands on the musculoskeletal system as posture and centre of gravity shift week by week. Pelvic girdle pain, lower back pain, sciatica, and rib discomfort are all common, and all can be helped with appropriately adapted osteopathic treatment. Positions are modified to suit your stage of pregnancy, and the approach is gentle throughout. We treat from the second trimester onwards, once the first twelve weeks have passed. Many patients continue with postnatal appointments to support recovery after birth.

Common Signs & Symptoms

  • Pelvic girdle pain — at the front or back of the pelvis, or in the groin
  • Lower back ache that worsens as pregnancy progresses
  • Sciatica-type pain into the buttock or leg
  • Rib and mid-back discomfort, especially in later trimesters
  • Pain that makes walking, stairs, or turning over in bed difficult

How Osteopathy Helps with Pregnancy-Related Pain

Treatment uses gentle techniques adapted to your stage of pregnancy, with side-lying and supported positions used throughout — you will never be asked to lie flat when it is not comfortable or appropriate. The aim is to balance the load through the pelvis and spine as your posture changes, ease the muscle tension that builds around it, and give you practical strategies for sleep positions and daily activity.

What You Can Do Yourself

For pelvic girdle pain, keep your knees together when turning in bed and getting out of the car, and take stairs one at a time on bad days. A pillow between the knees when side-lying often improves sleep. Little and often is the rule for activity — long walks on good days tend to trigger flare-ups.

Pregnancy-Related Pain: Your Questions Answered

Is osteopathy safe during pregnancy?
Yes, with appropriate adaptation to your stage of pregnancy. Our osteopaths work regularly with pregnant patients, use gentle techniques throughout, and modify positions so you are comfortable and well supported at every appointment.
At what stage of pregnancy can I have treatment?
We treat from the second trimester onwards — once the first twelve weeks are complete. Treatment is then adapted to where you are; many patients first come in during the second trimester as aches build, but there is no need to wait until pain is well established before seeking help.
Can osteopathy help after the birth?
Yes. Postnatal treatment supports recovery as your posture and load change again — feeding positions, carrying, and broken sleep all place new demands on the back, neck, and pelvis. Many patients continue with postnatal appointments after treatment during pregnancy.
