Osteopathy through Pregnancy and Beyond

Pregnancy is one of the biggest physical adaptations a body can go through. Postural changes and shifting centers of gravity can leave their mark on the lower back, pelvis, and ribs.

Gentle Support for Changing Bodies

As pregnancy progresses, your posture and centre of gravity shift week by week and the ligaments around the pelvis soften. That is a normal, healthy process, but it asks a lot of the lower back, pelvis, and ribs — and for many women it brings aches and pains along the way. We offer gentle, evidence-informed osteopathy from the second trimester onwards — once the first twelve weeks have passed — designed around what is safe and sensible at each stage of your pregnancy and recovery.

During Pregnancy

Treatment focuses on easing common discomforts including:

  • Lower back and pelvic girdle pain (PGP)
  • Sciatica and leg discomfort
  • Mid-back and rib pain as the bump grows
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Aches that make walking, stairs, or turning over in bed difficult

Alongside hands-on treatment, we give you practical strategies for sleep positions, getting in and out of the car, and daily activity — the small changes that often make the biggest difference between appointments.

What Happens in a Session

Your first appointment lasts up to 55 minutes: a full case history, a gentle physical assessment, and treatment adapted to your stage of pregnancy. Positions are modified so you are always comfortable and well supported — later in pregnancy we use side-lying or semi-reclined positions with plenty of pillows, and you will never be asked to lie flat on your front.

Techniques are gentle throughout: soft-tissue work to ease muscle tension, gentle joint movement to balance the load through the pelvis and spine, and clear advice you can put into practice at home.

Pregnancy & Postnatal Osteopathy: Your Questions Answered

Is osteopathy safe during pregnancy?

Yes, with appropriate adaptation to your stage of pregnancy. Our osteopaths work regularly with pregnant patients, use gentle techniques throughout, and modify positions so you are comfortable and well supported at every appointment.

At what stage of pregnancy can I have treatment?

We treat from the second trimester onwards — once the first twelve weeks are complete. Treatment is then adapted to where you are; many patients first come in during the second trimester as aches build, but there is no need to wait until pain is well established before seeking help.

What positions will I be treated in?

Positions are adapted so you are always comfortable. Later in pregnancy we use side-lying or semi-reclined positions, well supported with pillows — you will never be asked to lie flat on your front.

How soon after birth can I be seen?

Whenever you feel ready — many patients book a few weeks after birth. If you have had a caesarean or a complicated birth, we adapt the approach accordingly. Babies are welcome at your appointment.

Postnatal Recovery

The postnatal body has different needs. Treatment focuses on supporting recovery, easing the consequences of feeding and lifting postures, and helping you move with comfort again. Come in whenever you feel ready — many patients book a few weeks after birth. Babies are welcome at the appointment.
