Neck Pain & Headaches
Neck pain and headaches are closely linked. Restricted movement in the cervical joints and tension in the muscles at the base of the skull are common drivers of both. Desk work, driving, and prolonged screen use are frequent contributing factors. Osteopathic treatment works to restore normal movement, ease muscle tension, and address the postural patterns that keep the problem cycling. Many patients notice a reduction in headache frequency alongside an improvement in neck mobility.

Common Signs & Symptoms
- Difficulty turning your head fully, for example when reversing the car
- Tension and tenderness at the base of the skull
- Headaches that start in the neck and spread to the temples or forehead
- Pain that builds towards the end of a desk-based working day
- Clicking or grinding sensations when you move your neck
How Osteopathy Helps with Neck Pain & Headaches
We work through the muscles of the neck, shoulders, and upper back with soft-tissue techniques, and use gentle articulation to restore movement to stiff cervical and thoracic joints. Particular attention goes to the small muscles at the base of the skull, which are a common source of headache. Alongside hands-on treatment, we advise on desk setup, pillow height, and screen breaks so the improvement holds.
Learn about our approachWhat You Can Do Yourself
Break up long periods at a screen with short, frequent movement — even thirty seconds every half hour helps. Check your screen is at eye height and your pillow keeps your neck level when side-lying. Gentle range-of-movement exercises are usually better than stretching aggressively into pain.
Neck Pain & Headaches: Your Questions Answered
- Can osteopathy help with headaches?
- Osteopathy can help with headaches that arise from the neck (cervicogenic headaches) and those linked to muscle tension. Not every headache comes from the neck, so we assess carefully first — and if your pattern of symptoms suggests another cause, we will tell you and point you to the right care.
- Is neck treatment safe?
- We use gentle techniques as standard and carry out a thorough screening before any treatment. Firmer techniques such as manipulation are only ever used where appropriate and with your explicit consent — and there are always effective alternatives if you would rather avoid them.
- Why does desk work cause neck pain?
- Sustained positions load the same joints and muscles for hours at a time. The neck sits at the end of that chain: a stiff upper back and rounded shoulders push the head forward, and the neck muscles work overtime to hold it there. Treating the upper back and shoulders is often as important as treating the neck itself.
