Paediatric Osteopathy

Babies and children are not small adults. Their bodies are still forming, and the demands placed on them can leave subtle restrictions that show up as feeding troubles or unsettled sleep.

Gentle Care for the Smallest Patients

Paediatric osteopathy uses very gentle, low-force techniques suitable from the first weeks of life. We work with light touch and small movements — there is no clicking and no forceful manipulation. The birth process and the rapid changes of the first months and years place real demands on a developing body, and sometimes those leave subtle patterns of tension behind.

Our aim is to help your child feel more comfortable and settled. Most children find treatment relaxing; many fall asleep during it.

What We See Children For

  • Settling, wind, and feeding difficulties in newborns
  • Difficulty latching or a strong preference to feed on one side
  • Asymmetrical head preferences or flattening (positional plagiocephaly)
  • Tension after a long, fast, assisted, or caesarean birth
  • Restlessness and discomfort that make sleep difficult
  • Older children with growing pains, posture concerns, or sports strains

What Happens in a Session

Your first paediatric appointment lasts up to 55 minutes. We take a thorough history — pregnancy, birth, feeding, sleep, and development — then watch how your baby moves and holds themselves before treating.

Treatment itself is extremely gentle: light touch, small movements, and gentle holds. For babies we often work while they are feeding or asleep. You stay with your child the whole time, and we explain what we are doing as we go.

Safe, and Alongside Your Usual Care

Osteopathy is not a substitute for vaccinations, health-visitor checks, or GP care, and it does not cure medical conditions. Our osteopaths are trained to recognise when a symptom needs medical attention, and will refer you to your GP or health visitor if that is the right step. If we do not think we can help, we will tell you honestly.

Paediatric Osteopathy: Your Questions Answered

Is osteopathy safe for babies?

Yes. Paediatric osteopathy uses very gentle, low-force techniques — light touch, small movements, and gentle holds — that are suitable from newborn onwards. There is no clicking or forceful manipulation. Our osteopaths screen carefully and will refer you to your GP or health visitor if anything needs medical attention.

What happens in a paediatric appointment?

Your first visit lasts up to 55 minutes. We take a detailed history covering pregnancy, birth, feeding, sleep, and development, then watch how your baby moves before treating very gently. For babies we often work while they are feeding or asleep. You stay with your child throughout.

What can osteopathy not help with?

Osteopathy does not cure medical conditions and is not a substitute for vaccinations, health-visitor checks, or GP care. We work with musculoskeletal tension and help with comfort and settling, and we will always tell you honestly if your child needs medical review instead of, or alongside, treatment.

How many sessions will my child need?

Many babies respond within a few sessions. You will get an honest estimate after the first visit, and we never recommend more appointments than are needed.
