Common Questions

Everything you need to know about visiting an osteopath for the first time.

What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a regulated, hands-on healthcare profession that treats musculoskeletal problems using techniques including soft-tissue work, articulation, and joint manipulation. The aim is to support the body's own ability to heal.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. You can book directly. If you would prefer to speak to your GP first, that is also fine.

Will treatment hurt?

Treatment is generally not painful, although some conditions can leave you a little sensitive. Mild treatment soreness for a day or two is normal.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the issue and how long you have had it. Many problems improve in two to four sessions. Longer-standing issues may need a longer plan. You will get an honest estimate after your first visit.

How long is the first appointment?

Between 45 and 55 minutes. This includes a full case history, a physical assessment, an explanation of what is going on, and, where appropriate, treatment in the same session.

What should I wear?

Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal. You may be asked to undress to your underwear so a proper assessment can be carried out, but only within your comfort. A chaperone is welcome.

Is there parking at the clinics?

Yes — both clinics have easy parking. The Charing clinic has on-street parking and a nearby car park. The Ashford clinic is at Eureka Leisure Park, which has free on-site parking.

Can children have osteopathy?

Yes. Paediatric osteopathy uses very gentle techniques and is suitable for newborns onwards.

Is osteopathy safe in pregnancy?

Yes, with appropriate adaptation to your stage of pregnancy. Our osteopaths work regularly with pregnant patients.

Can I claim on private health insurance?

Many insurers cover osteopathy. Please call to check whether we are recognised by your specific provider (Recognised by AXA, Aviva, Bupa, etc).
